O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 round. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by the judge. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss during her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, lowest 3 and the second lowest. The judges were shocked, and they suggested that the public vote for Melissa who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the contest. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol right away.
